Cirencester & Burford 15th and 16th July 2025

The Golf Society of Great Britain’s July meeting was held in the beautiful Cotswolds, within the neighbouring counties of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. Day one took us to the lovely town of Cirencester and its interesting old course laid out by James Braid well over 100 years ago. The course is fairly hilly in places with numerous dry stone walls and good views of the surrounding area. Sadly the horizontal rain that fell for much of the round meant that it wasn’t really a day for taking in the scenery.

At dinner we enjoyed the excellent company of Club Captain Mr Mark Griffin and his wife Helen. Mark spoke of the considerable recent success of many members of the club’s junior section before being presented with a £600 donation by GSGB Chairman Mr Robert Hill.

A short and thankfully dry journey into Oxfordshire and the beautiful town of Burford followed the next morning. This was a first visit for GSGB to Burford Golf Club, a pretty parkland course with a very comfortable and welcoming clubhouse. To the relief of everyone the weather was kind to us and the 59 playing members enjoyed a glorious sunny day.

Despite the mixed weather we saw some of the best scoring ever recorded at one of our events, at least within the last 20 years. With firm and fast conditions, length was not a problem for most players and subsequently we had ten scores registered of 40 points or above over the two days.

The King of Morocco Trophy was won by Martin Taylor from Cirencester with an aggregate score of 80 points, beating Robin Colbourne (Moor Park) with 77 points into second place. Martin overcame a two shot penalty for playing on his home course or he would have won even more convincingly.

The Society Salver was won by Shirley Singh from Gog Magog with 78 points closely followed by Tricia Summers from Saffron Walden with 77 points.

Congratulations to all prize winners. A full list can be seen below.

Our next event will be the AGM meeting at Little Aston/Sutton Coldfield on August 19th/20th.
