Our August Meeting takes us to Yorkshire and to 2 courses that make their first appearances on the GSGB fixture list.
Huddersfield GC was designed by Tom Dunn in 1891 making it one of the oldest courses in the County. Further modifications were made by at least five architects including by Dr Alastair Mackenzie, Herbert Fowler and Donald Steel. Fixby Hall, as the course is more commonly referred to by locals, has held numerous prestigious events for both amateurs and professionals over the years such the Brabazon Trophy and International Ladies events. The course is routed over an undulating parcel of land made up with a mix of well bunkered parkland, moorland and heathland holes. The historic grade 2 listed clubhouse is full of charm and the elegant dining room is the perfect place to enjoy dinner in the evening.
Located in beautiful countryside on the south side of Huddersfield, Woodsome Hall is a delightful and undulating tree lined layout. Founded in 1922 by Harry Colt, with later modifications by James Braid, Woodsome is a very popular golf course with a wonderful old clubhouse dating back to 1462. Steeped in history the clubhouse is now recognized as the oldest original building being used as a golf clubhouse in the world! On the course, there are only two par-5’s on the card, one on each nine, contributing to a par of 70. The dogleg 5th is a lovely short par-4 on the outward half with rhododendrons lining the right side of the fairway. On the inward half the uphill 11th (“Armoury”) and right doglegged 15th are memorable short par-4’s as is the excellent downhill 17th.
