Pannal

In September we visit two of Yorkshire’s finest when we return to Pannal Golf Club in Harrogate and Sand Moor, located in the northern outskirts of Leeds. Pannal is located in the midst of beautiful countryside with views on a clear day to Wharfedale in the west and even as far as York Minster to the east. Designed by Sandy Herd in 1906, the course was improved by Dr Alister MacKenzie prior to the First World War. Further course changes were made by Sir Guy Campbell and Major Charles Mackenzie (Alister’s brother) in 1933. The round begins with tree lined fairways and a distinctly parkland feel but soon changes to a typical Yorkshire moorland course. Always in wonderful condition Pannal has hosted both Open Championship Regional Qualifying and the English Amateur Championship in recent years.

Sand Moor

Sitting on glorious heathland next to Eccup reservoir, Sand Moor is considered by many to be the equal of the more famous Moortown Golf Club next door. There are many spectacular holes here with the par-3’s having a reputation for being amongst the best in Yorkshire. Founded in 1926, the course was originally designed by Henry Barran but a major influence in the creation was Yorkshire born Dr Alister MacKenzie, famous golf architect and a former President of the club. Changes to the layout took place in the late 1960s with the advice from Henry Cotton and more recently updates have been made by architects, Andy Watson and Ken Moodie. With bunkers remodelled and other subtle changes made, the course is working hard to keep abreast of modern day innovations whilst remaining loyal to the original design.
