The Golf Society of Great Britain’s August meeting was held in Hampshire over two of England’s finest heathland courses. Both Blackmoor and North Hants offer a thrilling and challenging round of golf with fast greens and wonderful conditioning from tee to green. The heather was in full bloom making both courses look even more attractive, provided your ball stayed on the fairway of course. Day 1 saw 61 members play the famous Harry Colt design at Blackmoor which is currently ranked as the 71st best course in England.

Fortunately, the weather was kind to us with plenty of sunshine and no more than a light breeze to contend with.

The evening proceedings took place at Blackmoor where we enjoyed an excellent Dinner with Club Captain Mr Bill Stiles and Vice Captain Mr Mark Cornwall. Bill spoke of the success of the club junior section before being presented with a £600 junior donation by GSGB Chairman Robert Hill.

The glorious weather followed us to North Hants, ranked 82nd in England, where a trio of famous course designers, James Braid, Harry Colt and Tom Simpson all helped to create this classic layout. North Hants also boasts a very comfortable and attractive modern clubhouse.

The opportunity of a rare two-tee start meant that we could wrap things up by mid-afternoon.

The King of Morocco Trophy was won by Ian Edwards (Woburn) with 74 points, beating Paul Jackson 68 (Gog Magog) into second place over the two days. Ian’s score of 39 points at North Hants was the only score over 36 points throughout the event. The Society Salver was won by Pat Bennett (Reading) with 69 points followed by Pam Thornton (Chelmsford) with 63 points.
