Littlestone/Cooden Beach 24th and 25th August 2022

The Golf Society of Great Britain’s August Meeting was played over two excellent but very contrasting golf courses. On Day one we visited the wonderful hard running and sun bleached links of Littlestone in Kent complete with impressive new bunkering. The second Day took us an hour west along the coast to the more parkland conditions of Cooden Beach, which although a little greener in appearance, was still playing rather firm following a summer of drought.

A beautiful sunny afternoon greeted the 61 competitors at Littlestone. Despite the constant perils of sand, the fast running ground and lack of wind left the course almost defenceless leading to some rather large scores being recorded. As well as seeing two scores of 44 points (Geoff Ogden & Doug Carrington) Doug also recorded a hole-in-one on the 17th and Geoff managed to post a gross score that beat his age for the first time.

The second day at Cooden Beach could easily have been abandoned if the previous evening’s weather forecast was to be believed. The threat of thunderstorms and heavy rain was high but fortunately the worst of the weather seemed to pass us by. The early starters encountered some rather persistent rain but the day improved dramatically with the second half of the field playing the round in wall to wall sunshine.

At Dinner we were joined by the Littlestone captain David Weighton and his wife Annie. David accepted the £600 Junior Section donation from GSGB Chairman Robert Hill and entertained us with news of the club’s junior success in recent years.

The King of Morocco Cup was won by Geoff Ogden from Bath with 81 points, narrowly beating David Kerr from Northants County by 1 point. The Society Salver was won by Linda Cusack from Camberley Heath with 74 points who beat 2nd place Sue Lockley from Gog Magog by 2 points.

Congratulations to all prize winners. A full list can be found below.

The next event will be at Cirencester / Tewkesbury Park on September 19th – 20th
