Alwoodley/Fulford - 26th & 27th August

The Golf Society of Great Britain’s August Meeting was played over two of Yorkshire’s finest courses when we visited Alwoodley, designed by Alister Mackenzie, and Fulford, designed by his brother Charles.  Alwoodley is not only one of the Society’s highest ranked participating clubs but also one of the finest heathland courses in the British Isles.  Fulford was host for many years to the Benson & Hedges International Open.

Dry but cool weather greeted the 73 competitors on the first day and despite the perils of sand, heather and deep rough there were still a number of scores in the mid to high thirties.  As always Alwoodley was in pristine condition with superb greens which made for a very enjoyable day for everyone.  The second day at Fulford turned out to be another cool day with a few bouts of light rain passing through, mainly during the morning.  Fulford could best be described as a flat, wooded heathland course where once again the greens were found to be in great shape.  Despite Fulford having even more bunkers than Alwoodley, the scoring was better on average, particularly by the men.  At Alwoodley we were joined by club captain Ed Moss and his wife Vicki who are long standing members of the society.  At dinner Ed accepted the £600 Junior Section donation from GSGB Chairman Giles Hinchcliffe.  Both Ed and Nigel Dickson, past Secretary of Alwoodley and also past GSGB Chairman and President, acted as starters during the day which added to the occasion.

The King of Morocco Cup was won by Alan Percival from Astbury with 73 points, narrowly beating Tim Russell from Alwoodley by 1 point.  The Society Salver was won by Pat Bennett from Reading with 71 points who beat Alison Evans from Chelmsford into second place by 2 points.  Alison is obviously in fine form this year after winning our Scratch Cup at St Mellion and Yelverton in June.  A full list of prize winners can be found below and we congratulate them all.

The next event will be at Blackwell / Edgbaston on September 16th – 17th.
