Lyme Regis & East Devon Report and Results - June 18th and 19th 2024

Following a rather mixed summer so far, GSGB members were fortunate enough to enjoy two days of glorious warm sunshine throughout the June meeting.

This was a cross border affair with the first day of our event taking place at Lyme Regis GC, a beautiful cliff top course located along the Jurassic coast in Dorset. Luckily the wind did not blow and a few very good scores were registered as our 71 members enjoyed the high quality fast paced greens. It would be fair to say that both courses were in wonderful shape with some pretty fierce rough and plenty of well placed bunkers to contend with at times.

On Day two we all travelled west into Devon and lovely Budleigh Salterton, the home town of East Devon GC. The course is laid out on high ground 400 feet above the sea giving players some of the most spectacular views in golf as they look out across Lyme Bay.

Three of England’s greatest course designers, Harry Colt, James Braid and Herbert Fowler all had a hand in creating this most attractive of layouts. Despite perfect conditions the scoring was not quite as good as the previous day but that may have had something to do with the slightly thicker rough lining the fairways. Once again the course was presented beautifully and it’s easy to see why East Devon always features in any list of England’s Top 100 golf courses.

The clubhouse was almost filled to capacity on the first evening as we were joined by Bob Shepherd, the Lyme Regis Club Captain and his wife Rosemary who is currently the Ladies Vice-Captain. Bob spoke of the success of the club junior section before being presented with the society’s £600 junior donation by GSGB Chairman Robert Hill. We were delighted when Bob and Rosemary applied to join the society the following day becoming our most recent members.
