Aldeburgh/Woodbridge Report and Results 21st-22nd September 2026
The final meeting of the 2026 domestic season took place at Aldeburgh and Woodbridge golf clubs in the attractive county of Suffolk.
Aldeburgh is one of England’s finest courses and currently sits in the Great Britain & Ireland Top 100 list. Always a popular venue with GSGB members, the club has recently completed a costly renovation of both course and clubhouse with very impressive results. Numerous well known golf course architects such as Willie Fernie, Willie Park Jnr, J H Taylor and Harry Colt have all improved England’s 2nd oldest heathland course over the years prior to McKenzie and Ebert’s latest work.
Woodbridge has also been fashioned by many hands over the past 120 years but James Braid and Fred Hawtree are mainly responsible for the layout we play today. Routed through wooded heathland, Woodbridge is an undulating journey through bracken, gorse and sand.
September often provides some late summer sunshine and this year was no exception with dry and glorious sunny weather on both days. Even with perfect weather conditions scoring wasn’t easy with only one of our members beating their handicap. Despite the difficulty of the course there were eleven 2’s registered on the day, an unusually high tally. Day Two at Woodbridge delivered similar scoring with the exception of Deirdre Randall who somehow managed to score a very impressive 44 points with a handicap index of 12.
67 members competed in this event which was an excellent turnout just topping the 66 attendees at Trentham in July.
At dinner we were joined by Aldeburgh Club Captain, Mr Charles Denton, who delivered an entertaining speech. Following a superb meal, GSGB Chairman Richard Wadkin presented Charles with a £500 donation towards the junior section.
The Knight Super Senior Salvers were won by John Barrett from Gog Magog with 58 points and Heather Williams from Northants County who scored 62 points.
The Ladies Barlow Seniors Trophy was won by Deirdre Randall from Hartley Wintney with a total of 74 points and the Men’s Barlow Seniors Trophy was collected by David Kerr from Northants County with 70 points. A full list of all prize winners can be seen below.
The next events are the two Autumn Tours to Costa Navarino in Greece in October and the Spring Tour to South Africa in February 2027. We begin next year’s summer fixtures at Conwy GC and North Wales GC on May 25/26th.
The full list of fixtures for 2027 can be found on the home page of the website within the Latest News section.
