Northamptonshire County and Luffenham Heath Report and Results May 15th and 16th 2024

The opening event of the 2024 season took us to the counties of Northamptonshire and Rutland where 54 members played for the usual handicap prizes as well as our Scratch Trophies, first competed for in 1954.

Day 1 was hosted by Northamptonshire County, a beautiful Harry Colt design and a regular venue for Regional Open Qualifying. The course is a fine heathland layout which regularly features in most English Top 100 lists.

GSGB has strong historical links with the club which has been on our list of participating courses since 1966. The club has also hosted our society committee meetings for many years.

During the evening we enjoyed the company of club Chairman, Mr Martin Jaffrey, who was presented with a £600 junior donation by GSGB Chairman Robert Hill before speaking about the accomplishments of the club’s junior section.

The next morning we travelled into Rutland, England’s smallest county, with the threat of rain in the forecast.  Luffenham Heath is another highly rated and very attractive layout designed by James Braid, the most prolific of golf course architects.  Unfortunately the rain arrived by mid morning but this didn’t seem to deter a few hardy members who posted some excellent scores.

The men’s Scratch Cup was won by Adrian Perkins from Brampton Heath, playing in his first event, with 50 points which was two clear of Ken Warwick. The Ladies Scratch Cup was won by Annie Haylock from Rushmore who retained the cup with 38 points, one clear of Alison Evans.

The Men’s Handicap winner was Tony Hayward from Badgemore Park with an excellent winning total of 72 points. Tony was particularly pleased to finally beat his brother Terry!  The Ladies Handicap winner was Sue McRae who also came in with an impressive 72 points.

Ken Warwick (West Byfleet) and Yogi Jackson (Gog Magog) were the Day 1 winners and Bobby Kendall (Moor Park) and Debbie Brown (Sand Moor) won on Day 2.  Prizes were presented by Luffenham Heath club captain Paul Farrow after receiving a donation of £600 for juniors from Robert Hill..  A full list of all prize winners can be seen below.
