Broadstone
Isle of Purbeck

Broadstone and Isle of Purbeck Report and Results May 20th and 21st 2025

The first meeting of the 2025 season took us to the beautiful County of Dorset where 64 members competed for our usual handicap prizes as well as our Scratch Cups which were first played for over 70 years ago in 1954.

On the first day we visited Broadstone Golf Club, a beautiful Harry Colt design which was playing hard and fast following a prolonged spell of dry weather. The course is a fine heathland layout and regularly features in most GB&I Top 100 listings. GSGB has strong historical links with Broadstone GC which has been on our list of participating courses since 1962.

During the evening we enjoyed the company of Lady Captain, Mrs Sue Grieve, and Vice Captain Mr Clive Lear, who were presented with a £600 junior donation by GSGB Chairman Robert Hill before Clive spoke of the impressive accomplishments of the club’s junior section.

After a gloriously warm and sunny first day we were greeted with grey skies and persistent light rain the next morning as we travelled beyond Corfe Castle (unless you caught the Sandbanks ferry) to the Isle of Purbeck Golf Club. Purbeck is another highly rated and very attractive Harry Colt layout which dates back to 1892. Unfortunately the rain hung around until the early afternoon spoiling the wonderful views. This slightly favoured the later starters who were fortunate to be able to play much of their round without the need of an umbrella.

The men’s Scratch Cup was won by Richard Wadkin from Sand Moor with 43 points and the Ladies Scratch Cup was won by Clare Jenkins from Minchinhampton who also scored 43 points.

The Men’s Handicap winner was Lorne Smith from Royal Dornoch with a winning total of 67 points. The Ladies Handicap winner was Delyse Wadkin from Sand Moor who also came in with 67 points.

Stephen Hewitt (Vale Royal Abbey) and Yogi Jackson (Gog Magog) were the Day 1 winners and Barrie Luscombe (Bath) and Louise Andrews (Bury St Edmunds) were successful on Day 2. A full list of all prize winners can be seen below.

Our next meeting takes place on June 19th/20th in the lovely County of Northumberland where we play at The Northumberland GC and Hexham GC.

There are still a few places left at our summer meetings. Contact the office if you wish to add you name. Guests are also welcome.
