Goswick & Dunstanburgh Castle Report and Results - June 28th and 29th 2023

The GSGB June event took place in the north east of England within the lovely County of Northumberland. Day 1 saw 65 members play the excellent Goswick Links two days after hosting Regional Open Qualifying. Needless to say, the course was in wonderful shape with some pretty fierce rough and plenty of well placed bunkers to contend with.

Rain arrived for an hour or so mid round after threatening for much of the day but this did little to stop some very good scoring as members competed for the Sir Aynsley Bridgland (Founders) trophies. The clubhouse was filled to capacity as we were joined by Mark Ringland, the Goswick Club Captain in the evening. Mark spoke of the recent growth of the club junior section as well as giving us an insight into some of the club’s history before being presented with the society’s £600 junior donation by GSGB Chairman Robert Hill.

Sunshine and a fresh breeze greeted us on Day 2 at Dunstanburgh Castle which is another beautiful and very fine links course. Dunstanburgh offered different challenges (parking being one!) with a little more undulation but fewer bunkers to contend with, which led to better scoring overall.

The Founders Trophy for men was won by Clive Thornton (Chelmsford) with 73 points, narrowly beating Tom Martin (Sand Moor) on countback. The ladies Founders Trophy was won by Anna Major (Cavendish) with 69 points followed by Pam Thornton (Chelmsford) with 67 points completing a good couple of days for the Thornton family. The main prizes were all won by relatively new members so congratulations to you all.

Well done to all prize winners, a full list can be seen below.

The next event will be the AGM meeting at Dale Hill in Sussex on July 18th/19th.
