Sandiway and Delamere Forest- June 16th & 17th 2026
The Society travelled to Cheshire for the June meeting, making a welcome return to Sandiway and Delamere Forest, two of the most picturesque heathland courses in England.
Unlike our May meeting in Kent where we had to contend with some rain, June delivered warm and dry weather on both days for the 45 members who took part.
The first day was held at Sandiway, a beautiful undulating course designed by Ted Ray in 1920 and later refined by Harry Colt. The course is a charming and fun layout which offers a strong test of accuracy as it plays through mature woodland. Despite some fairly deep rough in places the scores were generally good with many players scoring 30 points or more.
In the evening our members were joined for an excellent meal by the Ladies Captain Mrs Anne Broster and Ladies Vice Captain Mrs Lyn Shopland. Following an excellent meal Anne entertained the room speaking of the club’s successful junior section before being presented with a £500 cheque for the benefit of the juniors by GSGB Chairman Mr Richard Wadkin.
On Day two we made the short journey to Delamere Forest, Cheshire’s finest inland course. Delamere was laid out in 1910 by Herbert Fowler on rolling ground that offers numerous spectacular holes. Tom Mackenzie of Mackenzie & Ebert renovated all of the bunkers in 2012 to create an even more impressive visual element to the round.
With another day of perfect golf weather we saw more good scoring on Day two, although they were down a little from Day one. It should be noted that both courses were in good condition and very playable.
The Founders Trophy for men was won by John Hallas (Sand Moor) with 74 points, beating Ian McMeeking (Sand Moor) who had 66 points. The ladies Founders Trophy was won by Shirley Singh (Gog Magog) with 70 points followed by Anna Major (Cavendish) with 64 points.
Well done to all prize winners, a full list can be seen below.
The next event will be at Trentham/Brocton Hall on July 22nd/23rd.
