Blackwell/Edgbaston Report and Results 16th – 17th September 2021
Despite the Covid cancellation of our May meeting, the 2021 GSGB season was a successful one for the society with good support at all of our events. The September finale proved to be no different with 63 members in attendance at two of the finest courses in the midlands.
This is no major surprise when you see that Blackwell was shaped by two of the greatest golf architects that ever lived in Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler. Edgbaston can also boast a wonderful architectural pedigree as a certain Mr Harry Colt was commissioned to design the course.
Fortunately the meeting took place in warm sunshine over the two days helping us all to forget that autumn is fast approaching. Both courses were in fine condition with fast and sometimes undulating greens to test everyone’s putting stroke to the limit. Not everyone agreed but the scoring would suggest that most found Blackwell the tougher course as there were considerably more Stableford scores in the 30’s at Edgbaston.
The Dinner was held at Blackwell where we were joined by Mr Ashley Cox and his wife Alyson for an enjoyable evening with excellent food and wine. GSGB Chairman Giles Hinchcliffe presented Ashley, the President of Blackwell, with the society donation of £600 for the benefit of the club Junior Section.
The Knight Super Senior Salvers, kindly donated by GSGB and Moor Park member Peter Knight, were on offer for the second year. The Barlow Senior Trophies were also played for, as well as the usual array of aggregate and single day prizes.
We were joined for the prize giving by the Edgbaston Captain Mr Tim Clarke, himself a member of GSGB, who also received the Society’s donation to his club’s Junior Section from our Chairman Giles Hinchcliffe.
The men’s Barlow Seniors Trophy was won by Joe Nixon from Chelmsford, playing in his first event, with 67 points and the Ladies Trophy was won by Gillian Curley from Stratford-on-Avon who also scored 67 points.
The winners of the Knight Super Senior Salvers were David and Joyce Storer from Alwoodley who both came in with aggregate scores of 62 points.
