Cavendish/Prestbury Report and Results 20th – 21st September 2023

The final domestic event of the GSGB season was held at Cavendish GC in Derbyshire and Prestbury GC in Cheshire. Both are excellent courses designed by renowned golf course architects, Alister MacKenzie and Harry Colt respectively.

In previous years the month of September often delivers some of the best weather of the season but sadly that wasn’t to be the case on the first day this year. The rain arrived just before play began and continued to fall for much of the afternoon on what was an already sodden course. Despite the rain, the vast majority of the field of 68 players battled through the difficult conditions to complete their round just as the sun finally appeared.

Cavendish is a delightful layout with a wonderful variety of holes as well as having excellent, albeit rather tricky, greens. Hopefully the weather will be much kinder when we next visit so that members can enjoy the true Cavendish experience.

In the evening the club put on an excellent Dinner where we were joined by Captain, Mr Bob Clark and junior organizer Mr Alan Webster for a very enjoyable evening. This was our first visit to Cavendish so Chairman Robert Hill presented the GSGB Participating Club shield to Mr Clark and the £600 junior donation cheque to Mr Webster.

Fortunately, our second day was played in sunny conditions at Prestbury and although the course was playing long following a few days of rain there were a number of good scores registered. Prestbury really is a delightful layout which looks even more impressive following the recent bunker renovation.

The Knight Super Senior Salvers, kindly donated by GSGB and Moor Park member Peter Knight, were won by Geoff Ogden from Bath with 57 points and Sue Devine from Brickendon Grange who scored 58 points.

The men’s Barlow Seniors Trophy was won by John Taylor from Leigh, playing in his first event, with 61 points and the Ladies Trophy was won by Delyse Wadkin from Sand Moor who also scored 61 points.

A full list of all prize winners can be seen below.

The next planned GSGB events are the Autumn Tour to Lisbon in October and Spring Tour to Abu Dhabi early in 2024. We begin next year’s summer programme at Northamptonshire County and Luffenham Heath on May 15/16th.

The full list of fixtures for 2024 can be found on the home page of the website.
